Chapter Twenty-Two

Sasha

Snowcapped mountains lined the distant horizon, surrounded by golden clouds lit by the crimson sun. A chill ran down my spine as I strolled through the garden, feeling the cool evening breeze sweep around me. I was lost in thought about what would come of our upcoming mission. I went over our plan in my mind, but then my thoughts strayed to my family. We would be in the same city again; how would I keep myself from visiting them? What if I could just stop by and check on how they were?

I’d visited the Wall of Mirrors last week and was pleased to find my mother had finally gotten off Xanax. She was now manager at the salon. My father wasn’t drinking so much, and I saw him cleaned up and getting ready to take her out to dinner. The house also looked better. Fresh paint made the walls shine, and it looked like they’d replaced the kitchen cabinets that’d been falling apart. It seemed the stars were keeping their word and helping them on their way.

I checked in on my best friend from back home, Nikki. She was doing well in school, had a steady boyfriend who treated her well and was living that busy New York life she’d always wanted. I was happy for her, even though I missed her and wished I could be a part of it all. As much as I wanted to see them all in person, I knew it was better this way. They wouldn’t understand any of this. It would blow their minds as much as it had blown mine, or more.

I sat out by the water, staring at the colorful horizon. Pink, gold and white streaks painted the sky, and I gave my heart a chance to ache. I had been working so hard to push away how broken I felt. How I had met the most decent human being in Trent, fallen in love with him, then led him straight into the arms of the Dark Fae. I had to make this right somehow. I had to fix this.

“Hey, Sasha, you alright?”

I heard his voice but didn’t turn. It wasn’t my fault. It was his fault. All his fault for not being there for me when he was supposed to be.

“What do you want?” I growled through clenched teeth.

“I want to make sure you’re prepared for what’s to come. I have some scripts to teach you. New techniques that will give you an edge. It’s more advanced training than what they would teach at the Academy.”

I still didn’t turn around, but it was tempting to listen. I could use all the help I could get.

“What are scripts?” My voice had less bite to it this time.

“Scripts are spells that are unique to your Fae type. Since your Fae type is a nagual, these are your scripts only. If your Fae type was a werewolf, you couldn’t use them. And same goes for all the other Fae types.” His voice was steady and balanced.
